Urban Heat Island Study

New York City, 2021

I conducted a project on the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) in New York City for a Graduate GIS course in Cornell’s Dept. of City and Regional Planning. My study examines the phenomenon of urban heat through an assessment of heat-conducive factors in relation to the spatial distribution of income and race across the five boroughs.
The data I used includes Landsat 8 surface temperatures as well as the geography of parks and street trees, socioeconomic indicators such as race and income from the Census, and historically redlined neighborhoods.
